Teaching Video

The video on the left hand side of this screen is a demonstration of one way a teacher could begin introducing multiplication using manipulatives, in this case specifically, called Uni-Fix cubes. This demonstration relies on the student learning that multiplication is groups of numbers. When you multiply one by six, it is important for students to understand that you have 1 group of six. When we multiple two by six, we now have two groups of six. This realization will help students begin to tackle the basics of multiplication. The blocks help students visualize how we get to our answers in multiplication and then students can begin to work with and experiment themselves and understand the basic concept of multiplication.
